The flexibility and versatility of a ChemE degree is honestly one of the best things about it, there are a lot of jobs that hire ChemEs even if it doesn't have much to do with the position (like mine). I sometimes think I should have just studied biochem, but I think I would have hated some of the classes while I enjoyed most of my engineering courses - and it got me to the same place anyways. I enjoy it as a job, I wouldn't mind being a legitimate process engineer, but I like doing research at the lab scale too - and there aren't many process jobs where I am anyways (Boston). When I first started I bounced around a lot between what I wanted to do in the future, between alternative energy and materials science and eventually a bit of bio in there.Ī couple internships and a minor in biochemical engineering later (aka a few bio classes), it was pretty clear that this was my path. I studied it for the typical reasons - I liked math and physics, so engineering seemed like the logical choice, and I liked chemistry so therefore ChemE. My degree was in chemical engineering but now I basically work as a biochemist at a cool biotech/pharma company. The company definitely took a chance on me (having little experience), but I showed them I was very willing to learn and work in a dynamic environment. I have no regrets in being given more responsibilities since I've learned more in my ~7 months here than I did in my couple years at the other company. It was a lot of work getting up to speed on reactors and working in a small environment, but now it is very manageable. I got an offer with a lot more responsibility and room for growth than the one I currently had (for example, at the pharma company, I wasn't really allowed to learn about bioreactor development - I was stuck doing kind of low-level purification work, whereas at the new company I wanted to run both bioreactors and purification). I developed an interest in food biotech and I started to shop around. I then went to work at a big pharmaceutical company, where I did purification process development for almost 2 years. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2014 with a bachelor's in chemical engineering (and a specialization in biotechnology), but I was a normal student in that I had no honors/awards to speak of.
